Method of protein identification that uses proteolytic digestion before analysis by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Proteins can be isolated by gel  lectrophoresis prior to digestion or, in shotgun proteomics, the protein mixture is digested and the resulting peptides are separated by liquid chromatography
